Black Queens coach Kim Bjorkegren eyes WAFCON title triumph

Ahead of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren has targeted winning the ultimate.

The swede took charge of the senior national women’s team 2 months ago and has since played 3 friendlies including a defeat to Morocco and Senegal and a victory to Senegal.

The former Racing Louisville manager is currently assessing 31 players including 24 players from the Ghana Women’s Premier League at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in preparation for the upcoming FIFA window. Kim Lars breaks down the purpose of his third training camp to 3Sports.

“For me, to see all the players in Ghana is impossible. When I am here, I maybe have the chance to watch one game at 3pm. But if there are no more games later, I can’t see all the players. So this was a great chance for me to bring many players to get to know them on and off the pitch.”

The Black Queens will be returning to the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations having missed out on the 2022 edition. Their first hurdle will be in Group C against defending Champions South Africa, Tanzania and Mali. The manager is confident of going all the way and returning to Ghana with trophy and gold medals.

“For me, it is simple to win the gold medal. You need to take it step by step and I know we are not going to be a favorite for people outside of Ghana. There are some 5 nations who have a bigger chance to win it. We need to qualify from the group stage. From there its 3 games and I know we can do it.”

The Black Queens last enjoyed a podium finish at the Women’s AFCON in 2016 when they beat South Africa 1-0 in the third-place play-off.
