NPP must vote out its current leadership in next primaries; they’ve lost focus — Amaliba

The Acting Director-General of the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), Abraham Amaliba, has called for a complete overhaul of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) leadership.

He said the current executives, led by Chairman Stephen Ntim and General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, have lost focus and lack the zeal to revive the party after its 2024 election defeat.

Speaking on TV3’s New Day programme on Friday, May 9, Mr. Amaliba, who is also a member of the NDC’s legal affairs team, said the NPP risks remaining weak in opposition if it retains the current leadership.

“It is clear that the current NPP leaders have lost focus, but I will be surprised if the NPP goes for elections and does not wipe off the current leaders,” he said.

He argued that the leadership, together with the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, lacks the strength to mount a serious challenge against the ruling party in future polls.

“With the kind of opposition we have led by Afenyo-Markin, I am not sure the NPP would be able to contest the next elections strongly,” he added.

Mr. Amaliba also cited the NPP’s poor showing in the 2024 general elections, where the party lost the presidential race by 1.7 million votes and saw its parliamentary seats drop from 137 to 88.

“I will be shocked if they don’t wipe all of them in a clean sweep. You had 135 MPs and now you’re at 88, even though you were in government. Yet, the executives still speak as if they performed to the satisfaction of Ghanaians,” he stated.

His remarks come in the wake of the NPP’s recent criticisms of the John Mahama-led government’s 120-day performance and its opposition to the suspension and ongoing removal process of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
