Commodore (Cdre) Emmanuel Ayesu Kwafo, the Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) Western Naval Command, has retired from active service after 38 years of distinguished military service.

A contingent of officers from the Western Naval Command held a change of command parade and a pulling-out ceremony at the Western Naval Headquarters in Sekondi to bid him farewell, in line with military tradition.

He handed over authority to Cdre Samuel Ayelazono, who, until his appointment, was the Flag Officer Fleet of the Ghana Navy.

In his farewell speech, Cdre Kwafo thanked God for His grace and protection throughout his illustrious military career, adding that he felt privileged to have served in the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) for over three decades.

He expressed gratitude to the officers and men of the Ghana Navy, Defence Civilian Staff, and his family and friends for their support during his tenure as FOC Western Naval Command and in other leadership roles within the GAF.

He said, “I am grateful for the opportunity to mentor young sailors and young officers, to counsel widows, to support wives, and to serve as a vessel for the kingdom of God.”

Cdre Kwafo noted that though his military journey was not easy, he served the Navy, the GAF, and the country to the best of his ability, with the help of God.

“In every command I held, I sought to build inclusive leadership, and I pray that the culture of unity, mutual respect, and shared purpose will continue to be a guiding principle for us all, long after I have stepped ashore,” he said.

He wished the new FOC well and expressed confidence in his leadership capabilities to elevate the Command to even greater heights.

Cdre Samuel Ayelazono, the new FOC, expressed gratitude to the military high command for the confidence reposed in him to take over the affairs of the Western Naval Command, saying, “I do not take this privilege and responsibility lightly.”

He pledged to serve with loyalty, dedication, and determination to keep the Command’s colours flying high, adding that he would be fair and firm in his leadership.

The change of command parade and pulling-out ceremony was attended by dignitaries, including senior military officers, heads of sister security services, government officials, the Member of Parliament for Kwesimintsim, and families and well-wishers of the outgoing FOC.
