Former Vice President and 2024 flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has stressed the need for greater inclusivity and unity within the party as it works to recover from its electoral defeat.
The NPP, which campaigned on the mantra of breaking the eight-year cycle of governance, lost the 2024 general election by about 1.7 million votes to the National Democratic Congress’ John Dramani Mahama.
The party also recorded a sharp decline in parliamentary strength, dropping from 137 seats to 88, with the rest going to the NDC and independent candidates.
According to Dr. Bawumia, recovering from such a setback will require unity, humility, and a broader embrace of all Ghanaians.
Speaking during the party’s post-election thank-you tour at Hohoe in the Volta Region on Thursday, May 8, he said the NPP must show that it is a home for national development, not personal ambition.
“Our comeback requires having open arms to all. We must reach out to every Ghanaian, regardless of region, religion or background, and prove that the NPP is a home for national progress, not narrow interests,” he said.
“With unity, humility and open arms, we will transform our setback into a powerful comeback.”
Dr. Bawumia also proposed the establishment of regional liaison committees to gather input from across Ghanaian society to inform policy development.
“These committees will ensure that every voice is heard and that our policies reflect the aspirations of all communities,” he added.
