The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has arrested a 25-year-old man, Usif Mohammed, for unlawful possession of firearms at the Asankare police barrier in the Asante Akyem South Municipality.
The arrest occurred on May 8, 2025, during a routine police checkpoint inspection as Mohammed was traveling from Kumasi to Accra.
Officers discovered a cache of weapons concealed inside a travelling bag in the suspect’s possession.
“During a routine inspection at the Asankare barrier, our officers uncovered several weapons hidden in the suspect’s luggage”, ACP Cephas Arthur, the Deputy Regional Police Commander, told the media at a press briefing at Bekwai.
He stated that the swift action was part of ongoing efforts to maintain law and order across the Ashanti South Region, revealing that “the suspect was immediately taken into custody to assist with investigations.”
According to ACP Arthur, the arrest forms part of a broader police strategy aimed at cracking down on criminal activities such as armed robbery and illegal mining within the region.
He reiterated the police administration’s commitment to public safety.
“We want to assure residents of the Ashanti South area and beyond that the police will continue working tirelessly to prevent robbery attacks and curb the proliferation of illegal weapons,” he emphasised.
Usif Mohammed remains in police custody as investigations continue.
He is expected to be arraigned before the court once preliminary investigations are completed.
The Ashanti South Police Command has urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to support the ongoing fight against crime.
