Emmanuel Annor responds to GFA fine over “I belong to Jesus” celebration

Nations FC forward Emmanuel Annor has reacted to a fine imposed by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) following his goal celebration during a Premier League clash with Asante Kotoko, where he unveiled a message reading “I belong to Jesus.”

The GFA fined Annor GHS 500 for what it deemed misconduct, citing league regulations that prohibit the display of religious or political messages during matches. According to a statement released on May 13, 2025, the Disciplinary Committee found Annor in breach of conduct rules, emphasizing the importance of maintaining neutrality on the pitch.

In response, Annor took to social media to express his disagreement with the decision. He posted:
“Why can football players celebrate LGBTQ+ sexuality but not their love for Jesus? Romans 14:8 — If we live, we live for the Lord; and if we die, we die for the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord. ✟ It’s kingdom work on the pitch!”

The incident has sparked widespread debate among football fans and pundits. Supporters of Annor argue that players should have the freedom to express their faith, while others back the GFA’s stance on preserving the sport’s neutrality and avoiding divisive displays during games.

As the conversation continues, the episode raises broader questions about the balance between personal expression and regulatory guidelines in professional football.
