The President of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS), Daniel Nii Korley Botchway, delivered a powerful presentation at the SOS-International Summit 2025, held from May 7th to 10th, 2025, at Ghent University in Belgium. He shared the stage with renowned sustainability advocate, Dr Timothy Zilevu.

The presentation, titled “A Blueprint for Sustainable Campus Environmental Initiatives: Models for the Global South,” outlined innovative, low-cost, and student-driven approaches to promoting environmental sustainability across campuses in the Global South. Botchway highlighted actionable strategies such as waste management, energy and water conservation, and the integration of sustainability into academic curricula and student governance structures.

As the representative of over 12.5 million Ghanaian students, the NUGS President emphasised the critical role of student leadership in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in education, climate action, and responsible consumption.

He noted during his presentation:

“A Strategic Framework – The 5A Model:

Assess – Conduct audits.

Adapt – Tailor global tools locally.

Act – Start with high-visibility, low-cost projects.

Amplify – Share success stories.

Align – Integrate into policy.

Student Leadership:

Advocates for Green Student Offices, civic clubs, and public forums led by students.

Stresses the importance of mentorship and institutional backing.”

The presentation received high praise from global stakeholders and reaffirmed NUGS’ commitment to shaping environmentally conscious graduates and fostering sustainable development at all levels of education.

NUGS remains committed to global partnerships and local actions that secure a sustainable future for Ghanaian students and communities.
