I’m happy the cedi is performing well – NPP’s Adomako Kissi admits

Dr. Dickson Adomako Kissi, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Anyaa-Sowutuom, has urged Ghanaians to take a balanced view of the Ghanaian cedi’s recent gains, calling for recognition of the broader economic factors behind its appreciation.

In an interview on GHOne TV, monitored by MyNewsGh, Dr. Kissi welcomed the currency’s improved performance, emphasizing its significance to the well-being of all citizens, regardless of political affiliation.

“I’m happy if the cedi is performing well. It impacts all of our lives. So I’ll not sit here and say that I’m not happy that the cedi is appreciating.”

Despite this optimism, he cautioned against oversimplifying the reasons behind the cedi’s appreciation, insisting that multiple elements contribute to such progress and that the public deserves transparency.

“But let’s be very frank with Ghanaians that it is a sum of the total of many factors.”

Dr. Kissi also took the opportunity to critique the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), recalling how the NDC attributed early gains in the dollar’s performance during the NPP’s first year in office to their own 2016 policies.

“When we assumed power in 2017, for almost a year when the dollar was doing well, the NDC kept reminding us that it was actions they took in 2016.”

He argued that just as the NDC claimed credit in the past, the NPP should also be acknowledged for current measures that are bearing fruit—particularly in areas such as gold reserves.

”So if today we are also reminding the NDC that when it comes to reserving more gold—that idea was touted—it’s not a new idea… but it was retreated, Ghanaians were reminded about it.”

Dr. Kissi’s remarks reflect a call for fair attribution and a broader understanding of the complex factors driving economic outcomes in Ghana.
