Private citizen withdraws CHRAJ petition to probe Sammy Gyamfi’s dollar gift to Agradaa

Eric Dumenu Akatsi, a private citizen who filed a petition with the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) seeking an investigation into alleged corruption involving Acting Gold Board CEO Sammy Gyamfi, has formally withdrawn his request.

This follows President John Dramani Mahama announcing that no further disciplinary action will be taken against Gyamfi.

The Gold Board CEO was sighted in video, which went viral gifting some dollars to controversial evangelist, Patricia Asiedua Asiamah. This triggered widespread public criticism and raised concerns about a possible breach of Ghana’s Foreign Exchange Act and the Code of Conduct for public appointees.

Civil society groups and members of the minority caucus called for Gyamfi’s dismissal, arguing that his conduct undermined public trust and violated the standards expected of a government official.

However, President Mahama decided to accept Mr Gyamfi’s public apology and bring the matter to a close—albeit with a stern warning.

In a letter dated May 14, 2025, Akatsi communicated his decision to CHRAJ, citing a reassessment of the situation.

“I am writing to formally withdraw the petition I submitted on 13th May, 2025, with reference number 122/12/BL.12 regarding the instances of corruption against Sammy Gyamfi, CEO of the Ghana Gold Board. After careful consideration, I have decided that it is in the best interest to withdraw this petition,” he wrote.

He further requested CHRAJ to halt any further action related to the matter.

“Accept this letter as formal notice of the withdrawal of the petition. Cease any further action related to the petition. I appreciate the time and effort invested in reviewing the petition,” Akatsi added.

He expressed his willingness to assist further if needed, stating, “If you require any additional information or documentation, please do not hesitate to contact me.”
