The five-member committee tasked with investigating three petitions seeking the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo will begin hearings today, Thursday, May 15, 2025.

The committee, chaired by Supreme Court Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang, was established by President John Dramani Mahama in accordance with Article 146(6) of the 1992 Constitution, and in consultation with the Council of State.

This follows a prima facie determination that grounds exist to examine the petitions, which cite “stated misbehaviour” as justification for removal.

According to a statement issued by the Minister of State in charge of Government Communications and presidential spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, on Wednesday, May 14, the committee will sit three times a week.

Their sessions will be held in camera, as required by Article 146 of the Constitution, meaning the hearings will be closed to the public.

The five-member panel also includes Supreme Court Justice Samuel Kwame Adibu-Asiedu, appointed in 2022; former Auditor-General Daniel Yaw Domelevo; Major Flora Bazaanura Dalugo of the Ghana Armed Forces; and Professor James Sefah Dzisah, an associate professor at the University of Ghana.

Chief Justice Torkornoo was suspended on April 22, 2025, following the announcement of the prima facie case. She was nominated to the Supreme Court in November 2019, approved by Parliament in December that year, and took over as Chief Justice in June 2023 after the retirement of Justice Kwasi Anin Yeboah.

Her judicial career began in May 2004 as a High Court judge. She was later elevated to the Court of Appeal in October 2012 before rising to the Supreme Court bench.

Meanwhile, Mr. Kwakye Ofosu has also clarified that there is no defined time frame for the committee’s work. However, their final report and recommendations will be submitted to the President once the hearings conclude.
