State recovers vehicle allegedly used by ex-GIHOC MD’s son amid ongoing asset probe

The investigation into alleged asset misappropriation by former Managing Director of GIHOC Distilleries, Maxwell Kofi Jumah, has taken a dramatic turn following revelations that one of the state-owned vehicles under scrutiny was reportedly being used by his son.

This development surfaced after national security operatives conducted a dawn operation at Mr. Jumah’s residence on Thursday, May 15, 2025, aimed at retrieving official vehicles believed to have been retained improperly after his exit from office. The former MD, who served during the Nana Akufo-Addo administration, was reportedly not present at the time of the operation.

Sources familiar with the matter say Mr. Jumah, upon learning of the operation, instructed his private security to return the vehicles. It is alleged that he admitted one of the cars had been in his son’s possession.

The vehicle forms part of a trio under investigation by state authorities. Among them is a Genesis G90 luxury saloon car, which records show was sold to Mr. Jumah at just 5% of its market value, raising questions about the legality and transparency of the transaction. Another vehicle, an Audi worth over $60,000, is also said to have been kept without formal approval from the company’s board.

So far, one of the vehicles has been successfully retrieved and returned to Accra, while efforts continue to locate the others.

The broader investigation, which is being coordinated by national security and supported by other government agencies, is focused on possible violations of public asset management regulations and misconduct relating to the sale and retention of government property.

Investigators are expected to summon Mr. Jumah for questioning as part of the ongoing effort to determine whether due process was followed during his time at the helm of the state-owned company.
