Prestea Huni Valley MCE sets out to fight illegal mining along river bodies

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Prestea Huni Valley, Dr. Matthew Ayeh, has led a joint operation with the Bogoso District Police Command and National Investigative Bureau (NIB) to inspect suspected illegal mining sites along River Manson.

The operation was part of a broader initiative by the Municipal Assembly to enforce environmental regulations and protect water bodies from further destruction caused by ‘galamsey’ activities.

This action was carried out on Wednesday, resulting in the apprehension of three excavators actively engaged in illegal mining in the river.

According to the MCE, the Assembly remains resolute in its commitment to end illegal mining on river bodies and forest reserves.

“We cannot sit idle while our rivers and forests are being destroyed. This operation is a clear signal that we are serious about protecting our environment and enforcing the law,” Dr Ayeh stated.

The River Manson, like many other rivers in the Western Region, has been heavily impacted by illegal mining activities, leading to pollution and the destruction of aquatic life. Hence, the Municipal Assembly has vowed to continue surveillance and enforcement actions across all affected areas.

Residents have been urged to support the Assembly’s efforts by providing timely information on illegal mining operations in their communities.
