Correspondence from the Ashanti Region

Dr William Atta Owusu, a senior communications member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Ashanti region, has issued a strong defense of Sammy Gyamfi, the Chief Executive of the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC), amid ongoing controversy stemming from his interactions with Agradaa that saw him giving dollars to her.

While acknowledging concerns surrounding Sammy Gyamfi’s gift of $800 to Agradaa, Dr Atta-Owusu argued that Sammy Gyamfi’s actions do not warrant dismissal and that he has been unfairly targeted.

He characterised Sammy Gyamfi as a “cheerful giver,” suggesting that the situation is being blown out of proportion.

“Sammy Gyamfi’s act wasn’t a wrongful act,” he stated emphatically, arguing that his recent actions never defy any state laws or were against any of the NDC’s code of ethics.

Dr Atta-Wusu addressed the accusations surrounding Sammy Gyamfi’s dealings with Agradaa, emphasising that it was Agradaa who requested money which Sammy Gyamfi, known for his usual generosity, provided.

“So, to err is human,” Dr Atta-Wusu declared, suggesting a general act of kindness and not anything else.

“Dr Atta Owusu also dismissed the notion that Sammy Gyamfi publicly flaunted the money, explaining that Sammy Gyamfi didn’t err by counting it in his car. ‘Let’s not exaggerate this as if he sprayed cash in public,’ he urged. ‘He was simply counting the money in his car when someone unfortunately recorded a video. Can we really call that a public display? Let’s not fall for these propaganda tactics.'”

Challenging the perceived hypocrisy, Dr Atta-Wusu drew parallels to Vice President Bawumia and President Akufo-Addo, citing instances where they accepted or dashed out money (dollars) in public without facing similar condemnation.

Dr Atta-Wusu dismissed calls for Sammy Gyamfi’s dismissal, emphasizing his competence, loyalty to the NDC, and political effectiveness.

He further alleged that the NPP is intentionally attempting to discredit Sammy Gyamfi because of his political prowess and potential as a future leader.

“So that is why they are trying to bring propaganda for President John Dramani Mahama to dismiss him”.

While not condoning any potential ethical breaches, Dr Atta-Wusu proposed an alternative to strict punishment, stating that “if he should be punished, a month’s salary should rather be taken from him and not sacking.”

He believes that a symbolic financial penalty would be sufficient to address any wrongdoing without jeopardizing Sammy Gyamfi’s career.
