NPP needs fresh leadership to reclaim Ahafo strongholds – Former China Vice Chair urges

The former Vice Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in China, Nana Moses, has called for new regional leadership in the Ahafo Region, warning that the party risks further electoral decline if urgent action is not taken.

His comments follow a troubling trend in the party’s electoral performance in the region, particularly in the 2024 general elections, where NPP’s presidential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, secured only 46.07%, compared to John Mahama’s 52.46%. “This marks a total failure and disappointment,” Nana Moses stated, expressing deep concern over the party’s dwindling fortunes.

He pointed to a worrying trajectory:

In 2016, President Nana Akufo-Addo won the region with 54.07% of votes.

In 2020, he increased this to 55.04%.

By 2024, the support had plunged under the current regional executives.

On the parliamentary front, the NPP held four out of six seats in 2016, but now retains only one seat after losing Tano South, Asunafo North, and Asutifi North to the NDC. “Benjamin Sekyere, Evans Bobie, and Patrick Banor lost woefully to Charles Asiedu, Haruna Mohammed, and Ebenezer Addo, respectively,” he said.

Nana Moses attributed these losses to the failure of current regional leadership to energise the grassroots, rebuild structures, and implement effective strategies. “The data from 2016 to 2024 under the current executives paint a troubling picture. We risk losing even our last seat in Tano North if nothing changes,” he warned.

He urged party delegates and financiers to demand new leadership capable of reversing the decline. “The NPP needs a leader who will rebuild grassroots structures, reclaim lost constituencies, and restore confidence in the party’s ability to deliver for the region,” he said.

Highlighting the NPP’s legacy of development in Ahafo, Nana Moses stressed that this could only continue under new leadership that inspires unity and delivers results.

“The time for change is now. Delegates and financiers must choose a leader who will reverse these losses, reclaim our strongholds, and secure victory for the NPP in future elections,” he reiterated.
