Ken Ofori-Atta, Ghana’s former finance minister, smells justice and is unlikely to return anytime soon or may prefer to live in exile. Like many of the appointees of Akufo-Addo, the former Ghanaian leader, Ken Ofori-Atta shared the same beliefs of Bernard Antwi-Bosiako, Gertrude Torkornoo, and Jean Mensa that John Dramani Mahama would never regain power. Thus, Ken Ofori-Atta purposefully engaged himself in financial crimes with impunity because the power of the judiciary was in his relative’s hands.
Many Ghanaian politicians who have been involved in corruption scandals and never think the law will ever pursue them had their perspective altered when President John Mahama established “Operation Recover All Loot,” or ORAL. Ken Ofori-Atta, who committed multiple financial scams, including embezzling money from the International Monetary Fund and COVID-19, and purposefully grounded financial institutions to enjoy a monopoly, never imagined that he would ever face justice.
The Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, disclosed during a press conference that Ken Ofori-Atta is a suspect in well-known corruption cases. He listed cases that came to light following the initial accusations, including the National Cathedral project, Strategic Mobilization Limited (SML), the contract termination between ECG and Beijing Technology Limited, the purchase of ambulances, and payments from the Ghana Revenue Authority’s (GRA) tax refund account.
When former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta did not answer his invitations, the Office of the Special Prosecutor labeled him a wanted person who needed to come to Ghana right away to be questioned. The office of the special prosecutor urged the former minister to return voluntarily or risk extradition or possibly being declared wanted again if he doesn’t, when Ken Ofori-Atta’s lawyer asserted that he is seeking medical treatment abroad and is not under Ghana’s jurisdiction.
The opposition NPP government is composed of politicians who can underestimate their political adversary, which seems to be the NDC, in addition to being corrupt, lawless, constitutional violators, arrogant, and disrespectful, like its leader, Akufo-Addo. In defiance of the law, the former finance minister had the audacity to sue the OSP for designating him wanted despite all of his crimes. Kwabena Adu-Boahene and Victor Kusi-Boateng, also known as Kwabena Adu-Gyamfi, followed suit.

The continuous fight against corruption by Mahama’s government has been a nightmare for many politicians, including Ken Ofori-Atta, who have either stolen state property or embezzled state monies. After the arrest of Kwabena Adu-Boahene, the former Director General of the National Signals Bureau, who was detained for embezzlement and illegal money transfers into private accounts, the former finance minister realized that the new NDC administration is a government that should not be taken lightly.
On December 11, 2024, I wrote for the ModernGhana news, NPP Politicians Must Return Stolen Money To The State To Shorten, their prison sentence or get Pardoned. Even though I often write probing articles about corruption, I know very well that they don’t like it because dark-hearted people wouldn’t like others to expose their misdeeds. When I learned that Justice Srem Sai, the Deputy Attorney General, had claimed that certain embezzlers and looters had asked to return their loot to avoid arrest and prosecution, I wasn’t surprised.
I want to make it clear to politicians who have looted the state properties and embezzled state funds that returning their booties to the attorney general or the law enforcement doesn’t quash making them free from prosecution. Since they broke the law when they took it, they have to pay for it. More significantly, the special prosecutor should start getting ready for another press appearance to declare Ken Ofori-Atta a wanted man once more because he is not coming to Ghana today or tomorrow.
I spent years doing everything in my power to educate Ghanaians about the fact that Ken Ofori-Atta was not a finance minister but rather had been appointed by his relative, Akufo-Addo, as a catalyst to help speed up corruption. Here are a few publications that support my claims and concerns, which were realized by the intelligent ones among Ghanaians to drive the NPP from office.
