Some parts of Accra got flooded on May 18, 2025, after heavy downpour Some parts of Accra got flooded on May 18, 2025, after heavy downpour

Accra and its surrounding municipalities were once again brought to a standstill on Sunday afternoon on May 18, 2025, as heavy rainfall led to widespread flooding, submerging homes and leaving commuters stranded.

The downpour, which began around 3:00 pm and lasted nearly three hours, affected neighbourhoods including Ofankor Barrier, Weija, Kaneshie, Labadi, Kanehsie, First Light, Dzorwulu, Adabraka, Adentan-Dodowa, and parts of Tema, with severe flooding reported in the Adjei-Kojo Kanewu area of Tema West Municipality.

Floodwaters also rendered major roads inaccessible, with the stretch between Awudome Roundabout and Awudome Cemetery, including the Obetsebi Lamptey Interchange, completely submerged.

Several vehicles broke down, forcing local youth to intervene and assist stranded drivers, helping prevent accidents near open drains and potholes hidden beneath the floodwaters.

The situation worsened during peak commute hours, compounding the inconvenience for travellers, with many stranded for hours.
