Syria thanks King Mohammed VI for decision to reopen Moroccan embassy in Damascus

Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani has expressed his country’s gratitude to King Mohammed VI for the decision to reopen the Moroccan embassy in Damascus.

Speaking after a meeting with his Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita, on Saturday, al-Shaibani described the relations between the two countries as “very good” and welcomed efforts to deepen bilateral cooperation.

“We thank His Majesty the King and the Moroccan government for their interest in strengthening these ties,” he said.

“We aspire to elevate them to a distinguished level, particularly in economics and investment within the Arab world.”

Bourita reaffirmed Morocco’s decision, which was announced by King Mohammed VI in his address to the 34th Arab Summit held the same day in Baghdad.

In his speech, the King declared that the Kingdom would reopen its embassy in Damascus, closed since 2012.

He emphasised that the move would “open broader prospects for the historical relations between our countries and our peoples.”

King Mohammed VI also reaffirmed Morocco’s consistent and principled stance on Syria, as outlined in a previous letter to Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharaa.

In it, the King reiterated Morocco’s support for the Syrian people in their pursuit of freedom, security, and stability, while preserving Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

As part of the decision’s implementation, Bourita announced that a Moroccan technical delegation will visit Syria next week to assess preparations for reopening the embassy.

The facility is expected to become a vital channel for communication and coordination in various fields.

In response, al-Shaibani confirmed that Syria will also dispatch a technical team to open a Syrian embassy in Rabat.
