We will see prices of data drop by the end of 2025 — Sam George assures

The Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, has assured Ghanaians that the cost of data will reduce by the end of 2025.

According to him, his ministry, together with key stakeholders in the telecommunications sector, is working to ensure that data becomes more affordable before the year ends.

He gave the assurance while delivering a keynote address at the commemoration of the 2025 World Telecommunication and Information Society Day on Monday, May 19.

The event was held under the theme, “Gender equality in digital transformation.”

“And so to the young people of our country and the people of this country, my promise was that by the end of this year, we’ll see prices of data drop and I remain committed to it. We will deliver on that, but trust the process,” he said.

His comment comes amid concerns raised on social media that the task force he set up in February has failed to achieve any reduction in data prices.

But the Minister clarified that the committee’s mandate was not to reduce tariffs directly, but rather to develop a road map to guide the process.

“I set up a committee in February, and people failed to listen to exactly what we set out to do with that committee. When I set up that committee, I did not say that in 14 days that committee was going to reduce data prices.

“That committee included telephone companies, the regulator, and sector players. The committee’s mandate in 14 days was to develop a road map that will lead to the drop in data prices,” he explained.

Mr George urged the public to be patient, stressing that the sector is still recovering from eight years of policy distortions under the previous administration.

“Look, we’re dealing with eight years of distortion of the market. I wish I could fix it… [but I must] attempt not to create further distortions by acting irrationally,” he said.
