The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has issued a warning to the public against consuming two alcoholic beverages—King’s Orange Flavoured Liqueur and Jupiter 1990—deeming them unsafe and unregistered.
Both drinks were found to contain marijuana extracts and are believed to have been produced illegally.
In a statement released on Monday, the FDA identified Famude Catering Services, an unlicensed operator in the Ashanti Region, as the source of these products.
“King’s Orange Flavoured Liqueur was originally registered with the FDA in 2022,” the Authority explained. “However, in July 2023, during routine market checks and lab tests, it was found to contain traces of marijuana.”
Following this discovery, the FDA revoked the company’s licence, shut down its production facility, and referred the matter to the Suntresu District Police for further investigation and potential prosecution.
Despite these actions, the FDA revealed that in April 2025, intelligence indicated that King’s Orange Flavoured Liqueur was still being sold in Koforidua, which led to the uncovering of a new unlicensed production site.
“On April 30, 2025, a joint team from the FDA, NACOC, and the DLEU raided this illegal site at Jachie Abidjan Nkwanta and found bags and parcels of dried marijuana, labels of Kings Orange Flavoured Liqueur, and another unregistered drink called Jupiter 1990,” the statement noted.
Lab tests confirmed that both beverages contained marijuana extracts. All seized materials were handed over to the Drug Law Enforcement Unit (DLEU) of the Central Police Command in Kumasi to aid ongoing investigations.
The FDA cautioned that “consuming such unsafe alcoholic drinks could seriously harm one’s health, including causing permanent damage to organs like the liver and kidneys.”
Retailers and wholesalers have been ordered to “immediately stop selling those drinks and return all stock to the nearest FDA office to prevent consumers from buying or drinking them.”
The Authority reaffirmed its commitment to working with the Drug Law Enforcement Unit of the Ghana Police Service and the Narcotics Control Commission to eliminate the circulation of unsafe products.
