Police in the Volta Region have intercepted a petrol tanker that was secretly transporting cocoa beans instead of fuel.
The vehicle, which was en route from Madina in Accra to Jasikan, was believed to be part of an attempt to smuggle the cocoa into neighbouring Togo.
The tanker, bearing registration number GN 3801-13, was seized on Tuesday, May 13, following a tip-off. Officers intercepted the vehicle within the Peki enclave, leading to the discovery of the concealed cargo.
According to a police spokesman who spoke to this portal in Ho on Saturday, May 17, the driver, whose name has been withheld, has been granted bail and is assisting with ongoing investigations.
The substantial quantity of cocoa beans has since been handed over to the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD).
Police say a manhunt is underway for the owner of the tanker, who is currently at large.
