The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) has launched a 12-day desilting operation targeting 17 major drains in the Ashanti Region to help mitigate the risk of flooding.

The operation began on Thursday, May 22, 2025, at the Aboabo River near the Airport Roundabout. Other flood-prone areas slated for desilting include the Pelele River at Aboabo, Asabi, Anloga Junction, and several additional sites across the region.

Preliminary assessments revealed that many of these key drainage channels are heavily clogged with silt, solid waste, and debris, posing a serious threat during the rainy season. The desilting effort is part of NADMO’s broader strategy to improve drainage infrastructure and reduce the frequency and severity of floods in Greater Kumasi.

Speaking to the media, NADMO’s Ashanti Regional Director, Alhaji Ibrahim, confirmed that the organization had secured the necessary authorization from the Ashanti Regional Minister, Hon. Frank Amoakohene. He added that an excavator had been made available to support the work.

Alhaji Ibrahim reiterated NADMO’s commitment to partnering with key stakeholders to tackle flood risks. He pointed out that the Aboabo Nsuo drain, in particular, had been severely narrowed by accumulated waste and sediment, limiting water flow. The ongoing desilting, he said, is crucial to restoring the drain’s full capacity and preventing future flooding.
