In an inspiring move to promote inclusivity in environmental education, a team from Eco Warriors Movement is expanding their reach and advocacy to the differently-abled persons in society.

The group embarked on a climate workshop at the Garden City Special School in Kumasi as part of efforts to make climate information accessible to all persons, including marginalized groups such as those living with disabilities.

The event was on the theme. “Expanding Open Climate Education to Schools for Persons with Disabilities”.

The team, working in partnership with Creative Commons, introduced climate change concepts using Open Educational Resources (OER) adapted to meet the needs of students with special learning requirements.

The session was attended by students and dedicated staff of the school, who actively participated in the visual and interactive learning experience.

Through the use of colorful illustrations, simple language and compatible materials, the facilitators successfully delivered key environmental messages in a way that resonated with the special group.

Otuo-Akyampong Boakye, President – Eco Warriors Movement, highlighted the group’s commitment to an inclusive approach in spreading the “Climate Change gospel”.

“Our aim is to bridge the gap in climate literacy by tailoring content to every learner’s ability. The response from the students and teachers here at Garden City Special School reaffirms the importance of inclusive approaches,” he said.

As part of the broader initiative, the project will also train over 30 educators and facilitators from special schools across the country.

Kiwix, an off-line technology, is to be integrated into the project to help deliver OER materials in areas where the internet can be a challenge.

It is to ensure that learning is not hindered by digital infrastructure challenges.

This outreach forms part of a growing movement to empower all young people in Ghana to take action on climate change—regardless of their ability
