PNP youth wing demands release of Adenta Kumi following NIB arrest

The Youth Wing of the People’s National Party (PNP) has strongly condemned the arrest of Alfred Ababio Kumi, widely known as Adenta Kumi, which occurred at dawn on Friday.

Kumi, a former New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary aspirant, was reportedly detained by officials of the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) over a petition he submitted to President John Mahama concerning the five-member committee investigating the removal of the Chief Justice.

In a statement issued on Friday, May 23, and signed by PNP National Youth Organiser, Muniru Mohammed, the party described the arrest as a troubling development that sends a “worrying” message to Ghana’s youth—particularly those finding their voices and speaking out against injustice, corruption, and the misuse of public resources.

“We view this action as not only intimidating but potentially suppressive, particularly at a time when the youth must be encouraged to blow the whistle on misconduct and malpractice in public service,” the statement said.

It continued: “Ghana’s future depends on the active participation of its young people in national development—not on the use of state security apparatus to silence them.”

The PNP Youth Wing is therefore demanding the immediate release of Adenta Kumi and the assurance that due process will be followed.

“Ghana needs jobs, opportunities, and hope for its youth—not fear, intimidation, and arbitrary arrests. The confidence and courage of young Ghanaians to stand for what is right must be protected, not punished,” the statement emphasized.

The group further urged state institutions to act within the bounds of the law and to uphold the rights and dignity of all citizens.

“We remain committed to defending the rights of the youth and ensuring that Ghana remains a beacon of democracy and freedom in Africa,” the statement concluded.
