A member of the Movement for Change’s communication team, Ebo Buckman, has accused New Patriotic Party (NPP) activist Alfred Kumi of allowing himself to be used by the party.
According to Buckman, since Kumi’s return to the NPP from the Movement for Change, he has been pushed by the opposition party to make several unsubstantiated allegations against opponents.
Speaking on Accra-based TV3’s New Day show on Friday, May 23, the anti-corruption advocate said he expected the now-arrested NPP member to have acted more wisely.
“I’ve been following him. Since he left the Movement for Change and went back to the NPP, they are using him to do all manner of things.
“He’s allowed himself to be used for political stuff by the NPP, which for me is quite unfortunate—because as a young man, you need to be very smart when it comes to politics,” he said.
Kumi was allegedly arrested by officials of the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) in the early hours of Friday, May 23, in what has been described as a “Rambo-style” operation.
While the reason for the arrest has not been officially confirmed, Kumi had recently petitioned President John Dramani Mahama to dissolve the five-member committee investigating calls for the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
In the petition, Kumi claimed to have intercepted a video allegedly showing Justices Pwamang and Adibu-Asiedu, together with Supreme Court Justice Yonny Kulendi, dining and discussing the matter with Thaddeus Sory—counsel for petitioner Daniel Ofori—at Santoku Restaurant in Accra’s Airport Residential Area on May 15, 2025, shortly after the committee’s inaugural sitting.
