The Eastern Regional Command of the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) took part in a community forum on May 17, 2025, organized by the Alliance for Koforidua Zongo Development.
The event, held under the theme “Fighting the Drug Menace in Koforidua Zongo,” marked the maiden edition of a community-driven initiative aimed at tackling drug abuse, particularly among the youth in Zongo communities.
The forum, held at Koforidua Zongo, brought together security agencies, traditional leaders, health professionals, and other stakeholders for a comprehensive discussion on the risks of drug abuse and collaborative strategies to curb its spread.
Addressing the gathering, Eastern Regional Commander PNCO Grace A-B Tawiah commended the Alliance for taking the initiative to spearhead community-led action against drug abuse. She described their involvement as a vital step toward creating a safer and more hopeful future for young people in the region.
“The Alliance for Koforidua Zongo Development’s decision to rise and take ownership in the fight against drug abuse and trafficking is a significant step towards securing a safer and brighter future for the youth and generations to come,” she said.
PNCO Tawiah, however, cautioned against vigilantism, urging community members not to take the law into their own hands. She emphasized that all arrests and handling of drug-related suspects should follow due process, with NACOC serving as the appropriate first point of contact.
She further stressed the need for continued collaboration to make Koforidua Zongo a drug-free community and a model for others across the country. “Education and awareness are our strongest weapons in prevention, and the Commission’s doors are always open to families, youth groups, and associations that may need our services,” she added.
Commander Tawiah also expressed appreciation to the organizers for hosting the event and for allowing NACOC to utilize the community information centre twice weekly to further public education efforts. She noted that such consistent engagement will significantly enhance awareness and contribute to reducing drug use among the youth.
The forum was graced by several dignitaries, including the Ada Hene, Eastern Regional Chief Imam Yusif Hamdani, Regional Grand Mufti Sheikh Ibrahim Saliah, Koforidua Zongo Imam, and representatives from the Eastern Regional Police Command, New Juaben North and South Police Commands, the Mental Health Directorate, and the Council of Koforidua Zongo Chiefs.
The event underscored the importance of community involvement in the fight against drug abuse and set the stage for ongoing collaboration between NACOC and the people of Koforidua Zongo.
