Adenta Kumi released after NIB arrest over Chief Justice petition allegations

Alfred Ababio Kumi, popularly known as Adenta Kumi, has been released from the custody of the National Investigations Bureau (NIB), hours after his arrest sparked political backlash and public concern.

Kumi, a youth activist and former parliamentary aspirant of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), was seen exchanging pleasantries with Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, following what sources describe as high-level engagements that led to his release.

He was arrested on Friday, May 23, 2025, by NIB operatives and charged with the publication of false news.

His lawyer, Clement Opoku Gyamfi, confirmed that the charges were linked to statements Kumi made on his social media platform and in a radio interview.

The comments stemmed from a petition he submitted to President John Mahama, urging the dissolution of a five-member committee investigating the potential removal of the Chief Justice.

In the petition, Kumi alleged that three committee members—Justices Pwamang, Adibu-Asiedu, and Supreme Court Justice Yonni Kulendi—were seen meeting with Thaddeus Sory, counsel for the petitioner, at a restaurant in Accra after the committee’s first hearing on May 15.

A video of the supposed encounter has since gone viral, though the authenticity and context remain under scrutiny.

The NPP has condemned the arrest, accusing the ruling NDC government of using state security to intimidate opposition figures.
