The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), Alhaji Sumaila Boakye, has directed all commercial drivers under the union to implement a 15 percent reduction in transport fares, effective Saturday, May 24, 2025.
Speaking at a press briefing in Kumasi on Friday, Alhaji Sumaila explained that the fare reduction follows a recent drop in fuel prices and is part of the union’s commitment to easing the financial burden on commuters.
He urged other sectors, including spare parts dealers, food vendors, insurance companies, and service providers, to emulate the GPRTU’s move by also reducing the cost of their goods and services, which are often influenced by transportation costs.
“We have taken the lead by reducing fares, and we expect others to also respond appropriately,” he told journalists, noting the union’s frustration with the continued high prices of products and services despite reduced transportation costs.
He further warned that if these sectors fail to adjust their prices, the union will meet to consider further action.
The fare reduction follows a meeting between the National Executives of the GPRTU and the Minister of Transport and applies across all services, including intra-city, inter-city, and shared taxi operations.
To ensure compliance, Alhaji Sumaila has instructed union guards to begin monitoring activities at transport stations across the Ashanti Region starting Monday, May 26, 2025. Drivers or stations found flouting the directive will face disciplinary action.
The GPRTU hopes this measure will not only bring relief to passengers but also encourage other sectors to adjust their pricing in line with current fuel trends.
