The Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has stated that Ghanaians should expect continued hardship under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Mr. Ahiagbah made the comment in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, June 9, while reacting to the implementation of the revised Energy Sector Levies (Amendment) Act, 2025.
“The hardship for Ghanaians will continue unabated under this government,” he wrote.
Parliament passed the amended levy under a certificate of urgency on Tuesday, June 3.
The law introduces an additional GHS1 charge per litre of fuel to help reduce the country’s mounting energy sector debts.
Mr. Ahiagbah, who has consistently criticised the levy, described it as “lazy and insensitive”, and accused government of ignoring public concerns.
“Despite the widespread disapproval of Ghanaians, the insensitive, lazy, and incompetent levy takes effect today. The government has simply refused to listen and take note of our overburdenedness. So, today, when you buy one gallon of fuel, you would pay GHS4.50 more… sad,” he said.
He also questioned the rationale behind recent increases in electricity tariffs, referencing a 14.75% upward adjustment in the first quarter of 2025.
“This insensitive and incompetent levy comes on top of the 14.75% electricity tariff increase in the first quarter of 2025. The question is, what is the 14.75% tariff hike meant to do for ECG? What is that for? Is it to pay for the exemption of the Jubilee House from paying for its electricity bills?” he asked.
