The Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations (MoCDTI) is currently hosting a two-day workshop with the Parliamentary Select Committee on Information and Communications to deliberate on its 2025 programme of activities.
The discussions also cover the strategic plans of agencies operating under the Ministry.
These agencies include the National Communications Authority (NCA), Cyber Security Authority (CSA), Ghana Post, Postal and Courier Services Regulatory Commission, Ghana Domain Name Registry, National Information Technology Agency (NITA), Ghana Meteorological Agency, Ghana Digital Centres Limited (GDCL), Ghana-Indian Kofi Annan Centre of Excellence in ICT (AITI-KACE), Data Protection Commission (DPC), and the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communication (GIFEC).
Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Hon. Samuel Nartey George, reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to transparency and collaboration with Parliament. He highlighted that the Ministry is preparing fifteen new legislative proposals that span the digital economy, cybersecurity, and data protection. These bills, he explained, will be submitted to Parliament in phases for consideration and approval.
One of the key reforms discussed is the restructuring of the National Information Technology Agency (NITA). Hon. George announced that NITA will transition into a purely regulatory body. Its existing service delivery roles and management of government IT assets will be delegated to a new, yet-to-be-named entity.
The Minister also gave updates on the One Million Coders Initiative, revealing that the programme will be accelerated through Public-Private Partnerships to create employment opportunities for digitally skilled youth. He mentioned ongoing collaborations with global tech firms such as Huawei, MTN, Amazon Web Services (AWS), and Oracle to provide specialized training modules.
Emphasizing the importance of access to digital resources at the community level, Hon. George appealed to Members of Parliament to support the refurbishment of Community Information Centres (CICs) and local ICT training facilities.
The workshop brought together Mr. Alexander Yaw Arphul, Chief Director of the Ministry; members of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Information and Communication; and directors and staff from the Ministry and its various agencies.
