The Intelligence Department of the Ghana Police Service has arrested a man posing as a medical doctor for fraud and impersonation.
The suspect, identified as Frederick Papa Kow-Assifuah, was picked up on Thursday, June 5, at Crispo City in Kasoa while preparing to meet another victim he had allegedly scammed online.
He is suspected of impersonating a medical practitioner at the United Brain Hospital in Mallam, Accra, and defrauding people by promising them international travel opportunities.
In a statement posted on its social media pages on Monday, June 9, the police said, “The Ghana Police Service, through an intelligence-led operation, has arrested a man for impersonating a medical doctor and defrauding unsuspecting victims under the pretext of securing international travel opportunities for them.”
“At the time of arrest, suspect Frederick Papa Kow-Assifuah was dressed in a white lab coat, with a stethoscope around his neck, and had arranged to meet another potential victim he had lured online,” the statement added.
A search at the premises led to the retrieval of several medical items, including two stethoscopes, three intravenous (IV) drips, five syringes, two sample bottles, and one roll of plaster.
Other items found were six bottles of vaccines, one Ghanaian passport, and an amount of GH¢8,500 in cash.
According to the police, the suspect also admitted to using his fake medical identity to engage women online, initiate intimate relationships, and convince them to send money for non-existent travel arrangements to Europe.
He is currently in police custody and assisting with investigations. He is expected to be arraigned before court in the coming days.
