The Ghana Scholarship Secretariat has granted a full scholarship to Dorcas Baafi, a 21-year-old former student of Oguaa Senior High/Technical School. This will enable her to pursue her dream of studying Medicine.

Dorcas, who hails from Jukwa Frami in the Central Region, scored an outstanding aggregate 7 in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). Despite her excellent academic performance, she was unable to continue her education due to financial hardship. She resorted to menial jobs in a bid to survive, with her dream of becoming a medical doctor slipping out of reach.

Her story was brought to light on Facebook by user Danny Kojo Mint, capturing public attention and prompting swift intervention from the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat. Under the leadership of Registrar Alex Kwaku Asafo Adjei and the direction of John Dramani Mahama, the Secretariat has offered Dorcas a full scholarship package, covering tuition, accommodation, and a monthly stipend.

“This is the true purpose of the scholarship scheme—to support brilliant, deserving students who lack the financial means to further their education.”

“President Mahama has reaffirmed his vision of ensuring that scholarships are accessible to the students who need them most.

No gifted student should be left behind because of financial challenges. We are resetting the system to serve its rightful beneficiaries,” said Asafo Adjei when he broke the news to the family of Dorcas after welcoming them to the Secretariat.

The move has been widely praised as a step toward equity in education, signalling a renewed focus on building Ghana’s future through investment in human capital.
