Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has cautioned that the government is not in a financial position to implement the new conditions of service currently being demanded by the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), as the ongoing strike continues to impact healthcare delivery nationwide.

Addressing journalists at a press briefing on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, the Minister disclosed that the GRNMA’s proposals were not accounted for in the 2025 budget, making immediate implementation unfeasible.

“We wish to draw attention to the fact that the conditions of service under reference are not captured in the 2025 budget and will completely throw the economy off-gear if implemented immediately in the manner it currently exists,” he said.

Despite the budgetary limitations, Mr. Akandoh reaffirmed the government’s commitment to constructive dialogue with the striking health workers, stressing the importance of reaching an agreement that balances fairness with national economic stability.

To help manage the crisis in the interim, he outlined several measures being introduced to maintain access to care during the strike.

“In the next few hours, the Ministry will publish a comprehensive list of healthcare facilities designated to support those experiencing a shortage of nursing services, where patients can seek alternative care,” he stated.

In addition, the Minister renewed the government’s appeal to retired nurses and midwives, urging them to step forward and assist temporarily in keeping essential services afloat.

He stressed that the situation requires collective sacrifice and patience as efforts to resolve the impasse continue.
