Ghanaians should have unlimited internet, not just more data – Davies Opoku

Davis Ansah Opoku, a member of the Communications Committee in Parliament and MP for Mpraeso, has urged the government to not only increase the amount of data bundles but also advocate for unlimited monthly data plans for Ghanaians.

His remarks follow the government’s recent announcement that larger data bundles will be available from mobile network providers MTN, Telecel, and AT starting July 1, 2025.

Sam George, the Minister for Communications and Digitalisation, stated at a news conference that the three major networks would be offering 10% to 15% more data on existing bundles.

For instance, MTN will reinstate its GHC399 bundle—which had previously been reduced—to offer 214GB. Telecel and AT will also increase the amount of data available across all bundles by at least 10%.

Despite these changes, Opoku and other critics argue that the pay-per-gigabyte model is outdated and hampers Ghana’s digital advancement.

In an interview on Citi FM on Tuesday, June 10, Opoku called on the government to collaborate with telecom providers to introduce flat-rate, unlimited data plans that better meet the country’s growing internet demands.

The MP emphasized that many Ghanaians, especially the youth, desire the kind of unlimited data access already available in countries like the US, UK, and Germany.

“It is not about a reduction in the prices of data,” Opoku said. “What we require of the government is to implement what is happening elsewhere—like in the USA, UK, and Germany—so that Ghanaians can pay a fixed amount every month and enjoy unlimited data services. That is what the youth are calling for,” Citi Newsroom quoted him as saying.
