Why Chief Justice Gertrude Sackey-Torkonoo Should Consider Resignation

As the impeachment process unfolds, Chief Justice Gertrude Sackey-Torkonoo faces a critical juncture in her career. The allegations against her demand scrutiny, and the potential consequences of a prolonged and gruelling process are too significant to ignore. In this context, resignation emerges as a dignified way out, allowing her to maintain her integrity, secure her retirement benefits, and preserve her legacy.

By resigning, Chief Justice Sackey-Torkonoo would not only protect her personal reputation but also pave the way for a smooth transition in the judiciary. Her departure would enable the institution to move forward, unencumbered by the uncertainty and controversy surrounding the impeachment process. This would be a testament to her commitment to the dignity of the office she holds and the greater good of the judiciary.

Whatever the case, the once all-powerful Akyem Mafia that dominated Ghana during the Akufo-Addo presidency, to which she was so obviously beholden, can no longer offer her “protection”, so to speak. As a trailblazer, having broken the glass ceiling as the third female Chief Justice, she has already cemented her place in history. By choosing to resign, she would demonstrate a profound understanding of the importance of timing and dignity in leadership.

It’s time for her to consider the long-term implications of her actions and prioritise the greater good. Ultimately, a dignified exit would allow Chief Justice Sackey-Torkonoo to depart on her own terms, rather than risking a potentially disgraceful end to her career. The choice is hers, but the benefits of resignation are clear.
