President John Dramani Mahama has emphasised the urgent need to prioritise the welfare of Ghanaian farmers.
The President stated that the country cannot attain true prosperity while its farmers remain the most neglected segment of society.
He made the remarks on Wednesday, June 11, while delivering the keynote address at the opening ceremony of the second edition of the Ghana Horticulture Expo 2025 at the Accra International Conference Centre.
President Mahama observed that despite the country’s rich soils, abundant sunshine and hardworking farmers, the agriculture sector — particularly horticulture — continues to suffer due to years of neglect.
“Our nation cannot prosper if the bare hands that feed it remain the most neglected. This is not just a technical challenge — it is a moral imperative,” he stated.
He said although Ghana is a recognised leader in exporting tropical fruits and vegetables, the country must move beyond rhetoric and deliver tangible results through deliberate policies that place farmers at the centre of national development.
“It’s time to shift from smallholder survival to value addition, competitiveness and youth-driven enterprise. The story of Ghana’s agriculture must change from struggle to scale,” he said.
Under the 24-hour economy, Mr. Mahama said the government, through inter-ministerial collaboration, is working to build the infrastructure, security and digital systems needed to support uninterrupted agricultural production and export.
The three-day event, which brings together key players in Ghana’s horticulture and export sector, is being held under the theme, “Innovate, transform, sustain: Driving growth in Ghana’s horticultural sector.”
It is an annual platform for showcasing innovation and investment opportunities in the horticulture value chain.
