The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) in the Bono Region has identified and flagged a total of 78 locations across the region’s 12 municipal and district assemblies as high-risk flood-prone zones, as the rainy season gains momentum.
Communities flagged by the disaster management body include Wamanafo, Adiemra, Jamera, Drobo, Japekrom, Newtown, Abesim, Kato, Jinijini, Bongase, Boadan, Chiraa, Baakoniabo, among several others. These areas experienced severe flooding that displaced a total of 976 people in 2023 and 2024.
According to the Bono Regional Director of NADMO, Fati Kine-Lam, the identification of these flood-prone areas, based on extensive risk assessments conducted in collaboration with the various local assemblies, forms part of NADMO’s proactive efforts to minimize the devastating impact of flooding on lives and property in the region.
“We have identified 78 flood-prone areas within the region. For instance, in Sunyani East, we have New Town, Penkwasi, New Dormaa, Kotokrom, and other locations. In Banda, we have Banda Ahenkro, Bongase, and others. Jaman North and South also face significant challenges,” she noted.
Ms. Kine-Lam emphasised that effective communication is crucial in managing and mitigating disaster situations, especially during the rainy season when the risk of flooding is high.
She said NADMO is committed to intensifying community engagement efforts across the identified high-risk areas.
“Communication is key during this season. We are engaging local communities to educate them about the risks associated with the rains and the preventive measures they can take,” she said.
