Correspondence from Eastern Region

The District Chief Executive (DCE) of Atiwa East in the Eastern Region, Owusu Nti Ernest, has categorically denied allegations linking him to illegal mining activities in the district, describing them as false and baseless.

In an interaction with the media, Owusu Nti stated that the accusations are fabrications by illegal miners who feel threatened by his long-standing advocacy for responsible mining practices in the area.

“I have been fighting against illegal mining even before my appointment as DCE. Now that I’m in a position of authority, they fear I will clamp down on their operations, which is why they are attempting to tarnish my reputation,” he said.

Owusu Nti expressed deep concern over the ongoing exploitation of vulnerable farmers, whose lands are often taken without compensation by illegal miners. He reaffirmed his commitment to protecting such farmers and ensuring that all mining activities are conducted lawfully and sustainably.

He further revealed that he has engaged with all mining stakeholders in the district to introduce practical measures that will promote responsible mining and boost the socio-economic development of the area.

“I urge the public to disregard these baseless allegations and instead support our efforts to bring sanity and development to the district,” the DCE emphasised.

Meanwhile, the NDC Secretary for Atiwa East Constituency, Begyina Isaac Godwin, has also come to the defense of the DCE. Speaking on behalf of party executives, he challenged Daniel Mensah, popularly known as Abeiku, to provide evidence for his claims or face legal consequences.

Begyina Isaac accused Daniel Mensah of being notorious for illegally seizing lands and engaging in unlawful mining, actions he says are well known in the district.

He alleged that Mensah has used his influence to avoid accountability despite several reports to law enforcement.

On May 23, 2025, Daniel Mensah held a press conference accusing Owusu Nti Ernest of engaging in galamsey, causing environmental degradation, and endangering lives and property.

Both the DCE and NDC executives have dismissed the claims as politically motivated and lacking merit.
