GRNMA strike: Nurses, MPs engage in productive talks, agree to further consultations — Chairperson Health Committee

The Executives of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) have requested to return to their council to further discuss the proposals and come back with more information, Dr Mark Kurt Nawaane, the Chairperson of the Health Committee of Parliament, said on Thursday.

Dr Nawaane made this known when he addressed the Parliamentary Press Corps after a marathon meeting between the executives of GRNMA and Members of the Health Committee of Parliament after hours of intense discussions in Parliament House.

The meeting, which lasted from 1000 hours to 1400 hours, aimed to synchronize activities and find mutually beneficial solutions.

While details of the discussions remained confidential, it was understood that both parties were committed to finding a solution that worked for all stakeholders.

On his part, Dr Nana Afriyie Ayew, the Ranking on the Health Committee of Parliament, said the Committee had a fruitful deliberation with the executives of GRNMA and hoped for a better outcome after the executives had engaged with their council.

The day’s meeting had Mr Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, the Minister of Health, the Majority Leader, Mr Mahama Ayariga, officials from Fair Wages and Salaries Commission and Ministry of Finance in attendance.

However, the Minister of Health declined to comment on the outcome of the meeting and the government’s next step of action to the media.

The meeting is expected to pave the way for further negotiations and potential agreements.

Nurses have gone on strike due to alleged unresolved conditions of service negotiations and unmet welfare concerns.

The GRNMA initiated the strike, citing the government’s alleged failure to address key issues such as allowances, accommodation, and workload.

The strike has significantly disrupted healthcare delivery, with many public hospitals scaling down or shutting down operations.
