AG gives breakdown of over GH¢548m stolen from state

The Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr Dominic Ayine, has given a breakdown of the amount of money the government lost in the National Service Scheme corruption scandal.

Addressing the press on Friday, June 13, 2025, Dr Ayine disclosed that at the end of the investigation, it was found that the state lost over GH¢548 million due to the existence of ghost names on the scheme’s payroll.

He indicated that the theft was orchestrated by a cabal that operated a scam involving former directors of the NSS across the country.

He said that in six years, the cabal managed to steal over GH¢548 million through ‘ghost names’.

He gave the yearly breakdown of the monies that were stolen as follows:

2018/2019 – GH¢25,857,836.16

2019/2020 – GH¢21,613,962.24

2020/2021 – GH¢55,670,584.32

2021/2022 – GH¢61,383,025.74

2022/2023 – GH¢350,926,977.12

2023/2024 – GH¢32,881,157.07

6 Service Years – GH¢548,333,542.65
