Jean Mensa summoned by Parliament over stalled Ablekuma North results

Parliament has summoned Electoral Commission (EC) Chairperson Jean Mensa to appear before a Committee of the Whole next week, as pressure intensifies over the EC’s failure to complete the recollation of parliamentary results for the Ablekuma North constituency from the 2024 general elections.

Despite months of agitation from stakeholders, including civil society and political actors, the EC has yet to finalise the vote tally in the constituency—leaving the parliamentary seat in limbo. The Minority Caucus recently petitioned the Ghana Police Service to provide adequate security to enable the EC to complete the process.

Announcing the development during the presentation of the Business Statement on the floor of Parliament on Friday, June 13, Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga confirmed Jean Mensa’s appearance before lawmakers.

“The Electoral Commission will be asked two questions, so the EC Chair will appear before the committee of the whole to answer two questions,” Ayariga stated.

The EC Chair is expected to address the long-standing delay in the Ablekuma North results and provide clarity on the Commission’s next steps in resolving the matter.

In addition to the EC’s appearance, Ayariga disclosed that the Ministers for the Interior and for Works, Housing, and Water Resources will also brief Parliament on Wednesday, June 18, regarding recent nationwide flooding and the government’s efforts to mitigate its impact.
