The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) has announced that the GHS 1 fuel levy will now take effect on June 16, 2025—one week later than originally planned—following concerns raised by industry players about the rushed rollout.
The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) had initially scheduled the levy to begin on June 9. However, the Chamber of Oil Marketing Companies (COMAC) objected to the timeline, citing inadequate notice and a lack of consultation. In response, the implementation date was revised to give oil marketing companies (OMCs) time to prepare.
Speaking during the 2025 Safety Week Celebration hosted by COMAC, Acting Chief Executive Officer of the NPA, Edudzi Tamaklo, praised the Chamber’s intervention and emphasized the importance of collaboration in policy implementation.
“Parliament authorised this on June 3, and it has since received presidential assent. Initially, the industry was up in arms. We understand the need for revenue and have provided justifications.
“However, when the industry reached out and clearly indicated that the proposed framework would pose additional financial burdens, we saw wisdom in their concerns and quickly acted to resolve the issue,” he said.
“Thanks be to God, we were able to reach a consensus. Today, I can say to the glory of God that COMAC members can now prepare adequately and stabilise their financial operations,” Tamaklo added.
The postponement is being hailed as a positive example of effective dialogue between regulators and stakeholders, setting a precedent for how the petroleum sector can navigate complex policy shifts with minimal disruption.
