Volta Okada Riders Association charts path for stronger leadership and legal recognition

The Volta Regional chapter of the Okada Riders Association is taking strategic steps toward strengthening its leadership and operations, following a partially completed regional election held on June 1 in Ho.

Despite a temporary suspension of the election process due to low representation from some zones, the association successfully retained its Regional Chairman, Secretary, and Organisers to ensure stability and continuity.

The remaining leadership positions will be filled in due course through a transparent and inclusive vetting process, according to national executives.

Mr. Dauda Fatawu Bansi, National Deputy Secretary of the Association, explained that the election was designed to promote fair representation by splitting the region into northern and southern zones.

However, low turnout from the southern zone made the full implementation of this model unfeasible.

“In the interest of progress and continuity, we maintained executives who have shown commitment and experience. We are confident that, with time, we will complete the full leadership structure through a process that reflects our values of fairness and inclusion,” he said.

National Vice Chairman Mr. Adam Suley applauded the dedication of the retained leaders and urged members to support them as they work to finalise the regional executive body.

He also encouraged all riders to uphold discipline and professionalism as the association pushes for the legalisation and regulation of Okada operations in Ghana.

“This profession has great potential to provide sustainable livelihoods. But we must demonstrate responsibility, wear protective gear, and respect road safety laws. That is how we earn public trust and the support of policymakers,” he emphasised.

Regional Chairman Mr. Dortsu Kwame Ametefe called for unity and collaboration among riders, assuring members that leadership remains committed to building a stronger, more accountable association.

“We’re on a journey to transform our industry. The support and discipline of every rider are critical to achieving our shared goal of legal recognition and professional growth,” he said.

He also cautioned against indiscipline and misconduct, stressing the association’s commitment to high ethical standards and accountability.

As the Volta Okada Riders Association moves forward with renewed focus, its leaders say they remain optimistic about completing the election process and strengthening their advocacy for a legal and regulated Okada industry that works for all.
