The Blue Water Guards, in collaboration with the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) and the Nzema East Municipal Police Command, have conducted a major operation to dismantle an illegal mining encampment at Abelebo in the Nzema East Municipality of the Western Region.

According to reports from the Guards, the galamseyers were actively engaged in illegal mining directly within the Ankobra River, just a few meters from Abelebo township.

Their operations extended dangerously close to the Abelebo Basic School, disrupting academic activities and posing serious risks to the safety and well-being of pupils and staff.

Many of the illegal miners had also constructed makeshift tents along the riverbank to serve as temporary shelter.

The operation led to the complete burning and destruction of several chanfang machines, floating boats, water pumps, and the temporary structures erected by the miners.

This action forms part of ongoing efforts under the Blue Water Initiative to restore and protect our river from illegal mining activities.

The Nzema East MCE, Herbert Kuah Dickson, has pledged to work closely with state security agencies to deal ruthlessly with galamseyers in the area.

He commended the Blue Water Guards and the Ghana Police for supporting this operation, which yielded positive results.

He urged community members to support the government’s fight against illegal mining.
