The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic canoe accident that claimed the lives of seven students from the Lawra Senior High School in the Upper West Region.

The incident occurred on the morning of Saturday, June 14, when ten members of the school’s cadet corps reportedly attempted to cross the Black Volta River near Dikpe during a routine jogging exercise.

Their canoe is said to have capsized midstream, resulting in the loss of seven lives.

Three other students were rescued and are currently receiving medical care.

In a statement dated June 15 and signed by the NUGS President, Daniel Korley Botchway, the Union conveyed its condolences to the affected families, the management of Lawra SHS, and the broader student community.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, the management and student body of Lawra SHS, and the entire educational community affected by this tragedy,” the statement read.

NUGS further assured the public that it is in close communication with the Ghana Education Service (GES), which is currently coordinating rescue, recovery, and support operations for the affected victims and their families.

“We wish to assure all parents and guardians with wards in senior high schools across the country that this heartbreaking event is being handled with utmost seriousness by the management of GES,” the Union noted.
