I’m compassionate but it’s impossible to feel sorry for Ofori-Atta — Manasseh Azure

Investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni has weighed in on the controversies surrounding former Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta.

The journalist—who authored the exposé on the SML deal, one of the cases for which Mr. Ofori-Atta is under investigation—says he finds it difficult to sympathise with the former minister.

“I consider myself a very compassionate person, but from what I know, it’s almost impossible to feel sorry for Ken Ofori-Atta,” he wrote in a social media post on Tuesday, June 17.

Mr. Ofori-Atta is currently being investigated by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) for alleged corruption-related offences, including issues surrounding the National Cathedral project and the SML scandal.

An Interpol red notice has been issued at the request of the Special Prosecutor, amid reports that Mr. Ofori-Atta is receiving medical treatment in the United States.

His wife, Professor Mrs. Angela Ofori-Atta, has confirmed that he recently underwent prostate cancer surgery.

In a statement issued on Monday, June 16, she announced that the robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy was successfully performed at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, on Friday, June 13, and that her husband has now begun postoperative care.

“My husband, Ken Ofori-Atta, the former Finance Minister, has undergone the scheduled robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy. This was to deal with prostate cancer, and it was done at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. The procedure took over four hours,” she said.

Prof. Ofori-Atta also revealed that the timing of the Interpol red notice made the situation more difficult for her husband.

“Kenneth has always been resilient. But this has been very difficult, with the OSP choosing the period just before his surgery to declare a red alert on him. Kenneth is bearing up well and focused on doing whatever he can to be restored to good health,” she added.
