The Member of Parliament for Effia, Isaac Boamah-Nyarko, has called for strict accountability within the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) over the accumulation of debt by private companies.
According to him, the growing debts owed by private entities to ECG should not be happening in the first place if the right supervisory structures were working.
He insists that the situation raises serious concerns about internal controls and responsibility within the power distributor.
“How did they happen? Is it that ECG was unaware, and if they were aware, who allowed those debts to power?” he quizzed during a panel discussion on Accra-based Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Wednesday, June 18.
His comment comes on the back of recent public discussions about the debt ECG is struggling to recover from various consumers, including state institutions and private companies.
The lawmaker argued that ECG’s inability to enforce payment plans and disconnect defaulting private users suggests either negligence or complicity among some of its staff.
“We should be mindful, from management point of view, that people should be held responsible for these actions and inactions,” he stressed.
The Effia lawmaker urged both Parliament and the Executive to convene a roundtable discussion on how best to tackle the debts owed ECG by various institutions including the Ghana Water Limited.
