‘America doesn’t see Africa as an ally’ – Diplomatic Observer speaks on U.S. travel ban on Ghana

International Diplomatic Observer, Adam Zig Na Abdullai, has stated that Africa is no longer viewed as a key ally by the United States, particularly under the administration of President Donald Trump.

His remarks follow the recent announcement of a U.S. travel ban affecting Ghana and other African countries.

Speaking on Happy 98.9FM’s Morning Show with Sefah-Danquah, Mr. Abdullai explained that since President Trump’s induction into office in early 2025, several foreign policies have been introduced that reflect a strong focus on America-first interests, often to the detriment of international relationships, especially with Africa.

“With what America is doing, it has been clear right from the start — in terms of foreign policy — that Africa is not really Africa is not really seen as an ally under this Trump administration,” he stated.

He cited the Trump administration’s immigration executive orders, increased tariffs, and the general trend of cutting aid programs as evidence of this shift. One significant example, according to Abdullai, was the drastic reduction in USAID, which he claims was executed in collaboration with business mogul Elon Musk.

“This is strike one on Africa. From that time, you can see that their posture towards us became rather nonchalant. They were trying to say that developing America was their only focus and ties to Africa were not relevant to that development”

Touching on the travel ban, Mr. Abdullai revealed that the warning signs had been present since January 2025, when over 3,000 Ghanaians were identified for deportation from the U.S.

He referenced comments made by Member of Parliament Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, suggesting that the deportation list served as a precursor to the now formalized ban.

“That announcement was a foreshadowing of this travel ban. What we are seeing now is simply the manifestation of a plan that was already in motion,” he concluded.
