Former Government Spokesperson on Governance and Security, Dr. Palgrave Boakye-Danquah, has predicted that former Assin Central MP, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, will become the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) next flagbearer.
Dr. Boakye-Danquah is confident that Mr. Agyapong, who lost the 2023 flagbearer contest to then Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, will this time defeat him in the upcoming primaries.
In a social media post on Wednesday, June 18, the NPP stalwart who has declared his support for Mr. Agyapong, claimed that Dr. Bawumia’s perceived influence in the party will be overturned.
“The DECISIVE BATTLE: The January 2026 primaries will be Hon. Kennedy Agyapong’s chance to ‘behead’ Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s perceived dominance,” he wrote.
“Top-down approach / Bottom-up approach. This is a clear Medusa and Perseus mythology. I am very confident that Ken Ohene Agyapong will have a DECISIVE VICTORY.”
The main opposition party has scheduled January 31, 2026, to elect its presidential candidate for the 2028 general elections, where it hopes to return to power.
The date was approved at a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held on Tuesday, June 17.
As part of the roadmap, polling station executive elections will be held on December 6, 2025.
Meanwhile, Mr. Agyapong and Dr. Bawumia will face competition from other party stalwarts, including former Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, Abetifi MP and former Agriculture Minister Bryan Acheampong, and former General Secretary Kwabena Agyei Agyepong.
