The Member of Parliament for Krachi East, Nelson Kofi Djabab, has called for intensive public education to combat rampant land degradation, linking the phenomenon to climate change.

Speaking during parliamentary proceedings on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, the MP emphasised the need for greater community awareness, building on discussions about recent rainstorms that have affected his constituency and others.

Djabab identified practices such as indiscriminate bush burning, tree felling, and general land degradation as major contributors to environmental depletion, warning that the nation’s climate cover is rapidly diminishing.

He noted that the problem, already evident in areas like Nandom, could soon affect the entire country if not urgently addressed.

The MP urged the Ghana National Fire Service and other relevant stakeholders to intensify efforts in educating communities about the consequences of such destructive activities.

“I call on the Ghana National Fire Service to educate our people because rampant environmental destruction—such as indiscriminate bush burning, tree felling, and land degradation—is becoming widespread,” he stated.

He also commended President John Dramani Mahama’s “One Man, One Tree” initiative, which aims to promote environmental conservation, and encouraged schools to revive student-led tree-planting exercises as a way to combat degradation.

“It is against this background that I call on schools across the country to support this timely and relevant initiative. We need to return to the days when schoolchildren regularly planted trees on their school compounds,” he urged.

Djabab further appealed to stakeholders in the education sector, including headmasters and teachers, to prioritise tree planting as a vital effort to protect the environment for future generations.
