The Alliance for Gban Development (AGD), a community-based organization in the mining enclave of Gban in the Talensi District of the Upper East Region, has condemned a recent violent attack on police patrol officers and renewed its urgent call for improved and lasting security measures in the area.

The group’s statement follows a disturbing incident on the night of June 13, 2025, when four police officers on patrol were ambushed by unidentified gunmen.

Three officers sustained gunshot wounds and were rushed to a private health facility in Bolgatanga after being rescued by reinforcements.

The AGD described the attack as “life-threatening” and a tragic validation of its earlier warnings about growing insecurity in the area, which were raised during a press conference on June 7, 2025.

That earlier warning prompted a swift response from regional and district authorities, including the deployment of ten additional officers to support the existing six in Gban.

However, the AGD says the renewed violence shows that the interventions are insufficient and poorly equipped to match the threat levels.

According to the group, patrol officers continue to use motorbikes despite operating in a volatile, gold-rich area with poor road infrastructure.

“This is a gross failure by authorities in strategic security deployment,” the group stated in a press release.

The AGD is demanding the following:

1. Provision of Armoured Patrol Vehicles

The group is calling for the immediate provision of at least two armoured pickup vehicles by Earl Group International and Cardinal Namdini Mining Limited. They have issued a July 2025 ultimatum, threatening to stage demonstrations if no action is taken.

2. Permanent Police Presence

They are demanding adequate and permanent police deployment at strategic points across the mining enclave—not as a temporary intervention, but as a long-term commitment to community safety.

3. Intelligence-led Investigations

The AGD expressed concern over the lack of arrests despite numerous armed robbery cases and hinted at possible complicity within the security apparatus. They are calling for a thorough, intelligence-led investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice.

The AGD stressed that the region cannot continue to live under the constant threat of violence and urged national security agencies to act decisively—not just issue promises.

“Our people deserve to live without fear. Our police deserve to serve without being sacrificed,” the group’s Secretary John Kpal Bognaab, added.
